Dear Cottagecore and Witchcraft Community

There is inherit racism both in witchcraft and the cottagecore community. As white people, running away from the society we ruined (even if it isn’t our fault alone) to live somewhere that we don’t own (sometimes on indigenous land) is colonialism, and it’s not cool.

I’m white. I’m not running away from society. I am enjoying some aesthetics, planting plants, and dreaming about a world without the societal issues we have. But I’m working on bettering it, by voting and supporting local business, and protesting for what is right.

Also, both witchcraft and cottagecore are exclusionary a lot of the time (though as a white person, you wouldn’t notice). 99% of what I see in cottagecore and witchcraft is cis, white, lesbian women. Products and practices are stolen from other cultures we don’t belong to or understand, and even as a white person I feel weird and excluded from this community due to a lot of this.

Be damn respectful, support POC who love the same aesthetics and practices (which they are honestly more entitled to). Don’t “smudge”, that’s not for white people to do. Acknowledge your inherit racism in your aesthetics, better yourself.

I want to be able to enjoy these lighthearted things without dealing with racists.

This has been a PSA from a white person, who isn’t as knowledgable about the disservice the witchcraft and cottagecore community is giving to POC people. (If anyone POC would like to add to this, I would love and appreciate it. If anything is wrong on my post, please let me know!)
